Hi, I’m Tony Brigmon. And this is:The Power of Kind Words.
The names in the following true story have been changed.
Yesterday, my wife and I had a surprise visit from our dear, long-time friends George and Betty Watson. I was sharing with them how I had just learned how to blog in WordPress and was getting to blog stories that I don’t usually have time to share during my professional presentations.
Betty said, “I’ve got a story for you. (So, I share Betty’s story with her permission) “Yesterday, Rex (her youngest son) called me and said, “Mom, you’re not going to believe this.
“Today, I was in downtown Dallas, when a lady walked up to me and said, ‘Are you Rex Watson?’ I said, Yes, ma’am. She said, ‘Is your mother Betty Watson?’ I said, Yes. She said, ‘Betty Morris Watson?’ I said, Yes, that’s my mom.
“She said, ‘She saved my life.’
“She then told me, ‘When I was in high school, I suffered from depression. One day, it got so bad, that I decided to end my life.
‘Your mother and I were in the same homeroom in high school. When I walked into class that morning, she looked at me and said, ‘You look so pretty today. I like your dress.’ Those kind words from your mother snapped me out of my depression. She saved my life.’
And, so it is, everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle. You never know when YOUR kind words will be just what’s needed to snatch them from the jaws of defeat and take them to the thrill of victory.
The lyrics to one of my favorite hymns are:
Have I done any good in the world today?Have I helped anyone in need?Have I cheered up the sad and made someone feel glad?If not, I have failed indeed.Has anyone’s burden been lighter today.Because I was willing to share?Have the sick and the weary been helped on their way? When they needed my help was I there? Then wake up, and do something more than dream of your mansions above.Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure, a blessing of duty and love. (Text and music: Will L. Thompson, 1847-1909, alt.)
It’s true. Giving kind words to others won’t cost you a penny. Yet, they may be priceless to some and of great value to many. In the example of this true story, they saved a life.
