After his service in Vietnam as a Green Beret, the Beret attended a formal military function with his fiancee. Afterward, they stopped at a restaurant for a treat.
Seated not far from them were three local bad-boy tough guys. When they saw the Green Beret, a small man in stature (about 5’7” and 140 lbs, dripping wet), in his formal military dress, they began to do what bullies do: hurl mean-spirited insults in his direction.
The Green Beret ignored them, which only added to their nastiness. Finally, all three guys walked over to the booth and the leader said, “You know what we’re gonna do little man? We’re gonna take you outside and give you a beating.”
The Green Beret looked up, smiled, and said, “No, you’re NOT because I’m gonna run.” And then, the smile faded from his face as he looked the leader in the eyes and added, “But, don’t you catch me, cause I’m not gonna lose a foot-race and a fight, too!”
There was an awkward moment of silence, then a nervous laugh by the leader who then said, “Aw, forget it!” And all three guys walked away to live to bully another day. Turns out, this “little man” was a BIG MAN in a little body, and tough as nails.
And so it is, when you’re prepared (and clearly this Beret was) you don’t have to be paranoid about threatening situations. And, you can even handle them with humor as this war hero did.
So, I invite you to make “Be prepared, not paranoid!” the Best Practice mantra in your life and pay the price of Preparation so you can face your challenges without fear, but with humor instead.
And, hey, don’t pick on the chicken, cause you might get a lickin!
P.S. This story inspired the original song below I wrote and recorded along with other Feel-Good Songs while serving as Southwest Airlines Ambassador of FUN.
One of the perks of my growing up in the backwoods of Louisiana, I can imitate some animal sounds.
So, yeah, that’s me making the chicken sounds in the song. Ha-ha.
